The documentation is attractive and filled with entertaining background info. All but one sample fell instantly into the groove that last one needed a bit of massaging before it locked in, even though the stated tempo was the same.Īs I've come to expect from Ilio products, the material is well organized, with phrases neatly sorted by tempo. The documentation includes tonic keys, but no major or minor designations Ilio felt that listing major and minor keys would limit the user's perception of the phrases.

Through trial and error, I figured out which samples were in C major and which were in C minor. Luckily for me, the song was already in the key of C - one of the keys used for most of the disc's phrases. I tried seasoning a dance-music track with a dose of Memphis Horns. In the up-tempo category, I particularly appreciate the easy, brisk sax groove of Class (100 bpm) the staccato punch of Motor (100 bpm) the chugging motion of Express (120 bpm) and the sweet, uplifting sixths of Pages (140 bpm). Some of my favorites on the slow side include the flowing, liquid melody of Honesty (70 bpm) the smooth, lilting groove of Ruff (80 bpm) and the gentle, relaxed slides of Red (90 bpm). The phrases themselves run the gamut from moody to move your feet. Of course, this is the kind of effortlessness that only comes from decades of hard work! As I listened to the discs, the words smooth and effortless kept coming to mind. The resulting blend is warm, sweet, and soulful. Either way, the variations provide a welcome organic quality.ĭoubling is a characteristic of the Memphis Horns sound, and many tracks are overdubbed two, three, or even four times for multiple sax, trumpet, and trombone lines. Perhaps they altered the voicings to better fit the tonal ranges of their instruments, or maybe they just wanted to try something different. Apparently, Jackson and Love work out their arrangements without detailed charts. While the basic phrases remain the same in all keys, their specific voicings often change. Each phrase is presented in five keys, and most phrases offer the same assortment of keys (C, Eь, F, G, and Bь), making it relatively easy to mix and match the different phrases. There are 153 selections in all, ranging in tempo from 70 to 140 bpm. Sorry for the delay.Memphis Horns includes various hits, swells, and effects, and it emphasizes complete phrases. BTW: Does anyone know if it's possible to buy the EXSP24 as a single plug-in from Emagic?ĮDIT: another by-the-way.I never received any email message that replies had been posted. It will just not work with any PerformanceTool mode (see above). If you are able to load EXS programs into the EXSP, then the VSL shouldn't be any problem either. To all the others: that's about the only info that I have. that still sound good when played without any PerformanceTool modes, it would be sufficient to use the EXSP24. RE "play VSL in standalone applications": I think for less "complicated" sounds like marimba, harp, brass stabs etc. RE "directory levels": Are you sure about the 5 directory levels in EXS24mkII? I have my VSL content for example in root/Applications/Logic 6 Series/Sampler Instruments/Orchestral/VSL/VSL Horizon Series/Glass & Stones/ followed by the instruments' sub-directories which go further down for at least two levels (which would make it 6 levels!!).and it works absolutely fine in EXS24. We notice the limitation to 5 (directory-)levels within logic's sampler instruments folder also for EXS24 mkII Hmm, *play the VSL* is really relative, i can *play* VSL also in wavelab. Or is a G5 so incredibly powerful as an audio workstation that I could actually do both my sequencing and Gigastudioing inside the same box? (Obviously this would be ideal.) Would I have to run EXS 24 through Logic, or can you purchase and run it as a standalone app like Gigastudio on a PC? And for those already running 2 computer setups, do you ultimately need more power on the sequencing side or the Gigastudio side? Seems like all those Giga instruments have to end up as an audio track sooner or later, which puts the burden on the sequencing computer.

I'm wondering if it makes any sense to consider doing it in the opposite direction, though: continuing to sequence on the PC with Cubase, and running Opus 1 on a G5 with EXS24. (Hopefully continuing to use Cubase under OSX, though Logic would also be a fall-back plan if that's problematic). I'm thinking about turning this machine into a Gigastudio, primarily to run Opus 1, and getting a G5 to become the sequencer. Hi, PC user here trying to plan my future direction with technology.Ĭurrently I use Cubase SX 2 on a PC for sequencing.
